  • Rewarding Touch with GO SNIFF – LLW with NO FOOD – demo by David Muriello

This video clip is related to the earlier “moving mode” clip we already shared. Check out how David rewards Lido for a hand target with the opportunity to “go sniff!” Great demonstration!

Even though Lido is off-leash in this example, can you see how this could work as a reward for LLW?

Anyone remember what the science-y name is for the principle of rewarding a less likely behavior with a more likely (and more enjoyable!) behavior?

You’re on the right track, Chris. As a general answer that is correct, but I believe Catherine is looking for something more specific with her question above. Think specifically about using an desired activity as a reward.

        . . . positive reinforcement?

@Chris – another good answer in the right direction, and still too general. 🙂

Hint: It’s a person’s NAME – and we’re rewarding a behavior with the opportunity to do a more desireable behavior. Also known as “eat your veggies to get to eat dessert”…

The correct answer is: Premack Principle. Here’s a short explanation and another video of a trainer using Premack to reinforce LLW:

This is sad . . . I actually have a website about the Premack Principle open for reference that I was doing and missed it completely in the question.

              Please don’t tell anyone.

???? – no worries, @Chris ! Thanks for your humility and humor! We’re all a “work in progress” and it’s okay to get distracted and miss details! Easy to do, when you are as busy as you are!

Agreed – don’t be hard on yourself for that, especially with technical terminology! It’s always about finding ways to get good results and build great relationships with the dogs – never about knowing terminology cold.
