I love the idea of giving space to help the fearful puppy. As a pet dog trainer, I find puppy parents want to push their puppies into play (or human interaction) right away.

If I were in that situation, I would give puppy space. I would do curved body language, no eye contact, lean away, etc. My friend has an EXTREMELY timid, shy and fearful senior dog. I was house/pet sitting their pups. (Oh sorry forgot to say her name was Princess). I had to do a lot of calming signals ( lol I know I looked ridiculous doing it ????), lots of staying still and looking away, curved body and like she said playing with the other pups. I found that when I played with the other pups, Princess would come near me, I didn’t touch her at all unless she literally touched me. When I did touch her, it was only a quick second, then release. She eventually was comfortable with me, to the point where she would push her body into my legs for scratches ???? ❤️. It was so sweet and rewarding at the same time. ???? Sorry for the long reply! ????

… lol sorry one more thing I did with Princess was throw treats her way, far far away from me and within her comfort zone. She was fearful of loud noises to and extravagant movements, but she seemed fine with me tossing treats. ????????‍♀️ It was a bit difficult to with the other dogs, one 40 lbs and the other two were Maltese mixed pups ????. I had to teach them a sit stay in order to stop them from from chasing and eating Princesses treat! ????

@Keala_Wai – wonderful work. It’s no small thing to manage multiple dogs while working with a cautious pup. Sounds like you did great – and yes! It’s so fulfilling when you are accepted into the circle of trust. ????
