Show and Tell Time- what’s your best “Leave it” alternative?
A few months ago we had a ▶ fun discussion◀ that started with a video of Kate Senisi (New York School for the Dogs) sharing a fist technique she uses on walks, to lure a dog past distractions and keep them in the proper position. Then Paula M shared a work in progress with teaching a cue called “Noses Up!” with her client’s dog, Opal.
I’m resharing this thread because I think it’s pertinent to our disussions on Leave it, here.
First, I’d love it if Paula could share an updated video on Opal’s progress. Possible? @Bernerlabreclectus
Also really grateful for @RADS recent post on ▶Non-verbal Impulse Control ◀– check that out if you haven’t seen it yet!
Next, does anyone have any other cues or behaviors that function to let a dog know to “Ignore that – pay attention to me”? Let’s talk about them!

Okay, Crickets! I see you! ????
I’m going to drop in a little clip that I grabbed one day when Joy and I were out in our “front yard”. We live in a travel trailer and were camping on friends’ property. We’d just come back from a hike and were hanging out. She was not under any cues, whatsoever. She saw sheep moving in the field. Her “default” response? Lie down.
I taught her as a puppy to lie down as a default when she was really excited. Rather than screaming (which is what she does, rather than barking), rather than bouncing, biting at the leash, running in circles or any other crazy-making behavior, if she really, really wanted something, she had to lie down. It was like a puppy please only a bit more solid for her.
Fast forward 10 years and she chooses it on her own in certain conditions. Like watching sheep.
Gotta love it. ???? I love a default behavior – one where the dog is making the choice on what to do, what will pay, what is her next, best option. A thinking dog is sooo pleasant to live with, rather than having to “micromanage” behavior with cues all the time.
What do you think about this – is it an alternative to Leave It?

Yass!, this is def ‘Leave It’. I am loving how she is chill and looking at them, the soft eyes and soft blinks. Totally in love with her <3
