One of my dogs, Bond, is a howler and we have a singalong at least once a day. After months of our daily duos, my other dog, Bean, decided to join in, too, but what comes out of her mouth is hideous. She warbles and shrieks in a way that’s distressing enough that Bond stops his own howling to sniff her mouth and try to determine if there’s a demon trapped inside.

The weird thing about Bond’s howling is that he also does it when he has an edible chewie or a moderately interesting food item, like a dry biscuit or a carrot. Rather than eating it right away, he contemplates burying it. But as he’s in the midst of the burial routine, he howls a piteous howl that makes you think he’s mourning the loss of a friend!

Check out this video of my weird dork!

Oh wow. This is so sad/cute! It’s like he’s worrying about EXACTLY where to stash it! I feel for him – perfectionism is the enemy!

And I need to see the singalong with Bean, too, of course.

The behavior I’ll share is just something new to me… my girls are becoming close friends and often want to lie right next to each other. ???? I’ve never had dogs who BOTH enjoyed cuddling each other and it’s the sweetest thing. I’m usually working so don’t have a photo to share but will try and grab one soon.

    Adorable video.

It would be interesting to learn more about whines and their meanings. My son’s dog sounds like he’s “losing air” when he whines and he does it a LOT. I don’t think he knows he’s doing it.

My GSD is a howler and has taught our new lab to howl as well. They join in heartily for Happy Birthday to the joy of some, and the annoyance of others. They also howl randomly when I put them in our TV room for class time. I used to get embarrassed when my dogs howled during class (usually once a class for a couple of minutes), but now I just tell people their bored and we all get a chuckle out of it.

Years ago, I had a GSD and 4 other dogs, and we lived near a FD. Every day, the FD had one noontime siren, and this inspired the GSD to begin the choir. None of my other dogs had previously howled, but they’d all join Reina, much to my glee.

Here is just one of Barkley’s weird but apparently fun and soothing habits!

He gets to scratch, dance, vocalize, wipe his feet and fluff the curtains all at once!

Oh, Barkley! What a sweet goof! I love the back-leg kick at the end!

A guest dog named Bogey would do something similar with my ottoman:

I asked his pet parent that very question, @jenz , and she said he does that behavior regularly even when nude.
