  • Sight – Sound – Touch – Smell: Variables to Consider – Happy Nail Trims Pt. 7

This is the step where you get to analyze and create a specific plan for YOUR dog. Were they sensitive to any of the previous steps? If so, use care when choosing how to bring the next step into your practice. ????

Remember that all of these variables with the Dremel (or other nail trim tool) matter a lot to your dog:

    • Where you are practicing
    • Who is holding the tool
    • Who else is there
    • What body part the tool is touching
    • The Sounds
    • The Feel (of the tool; of your handling; of their position)
    • The Smell – that nail dust stinks!

If your dog is sensitive with any of these things, you can circle back and begin to work on them isolated before pairing them together with some of the other variables. This doesn’t have to take a long time of terribly many episodes, but you do need to consider them.

Since Bliss was VERY touch sensitive feeling the Dremel, I began with turning it on and using the back of it to touch her shoulder -through my hand – so she could feel the vibration as I marked & rewarded.

????I worked to bring the back of the Dremel to her offered paw next. She could feel the vibration. Because of all the sound work and other vibration work I had done, because I had simulated the sound while touching her toenails, this next step was really not that big of a deal, and we made it through in just a few repetitions. Honestly!

The next thing I knew, I was practicing one little touch to a nail with the Dremel ON and Bliss was… well, if not “blissful”, she was certainly enthusiastic and relaxed. ????

To keep her in that state of mind, I kept the sessions super, super short. ONE NAIL at a time is plenty-enough!
