    Hi!

All is well here with Joy! She just turned 13 months old today! She is easily the light of our lives and keeps us laughing daily.

Since the rescue I adopted her from was breathing down my neck about having her spayed by 12 months, I did feel pressure to do so asap. But, we did NOT go with their clinic (had some red flags about no stitches, only glue, no stairs and confining her as much as possible for 10-14 days.) My own vet was available, but as I was coming back from Mexico the day before surgery was scheduled, I rescheduled her for the next day.

So, the semi-retired vet/owner of the vet clinic did the procedure. He did it excellently. I got called that afternoon by the vet himself, with a report and instructions for her recovery, then one of his assistants checked in later with further instructions and answered questions. I picked Joy up at 4 pm and she was looking pretty good! They kept her comfortable with both Carprofen and Gabapentin, and said I would be able to give her a sedative, Trazadone, as needed to keep her from injuring herself with too much energy. I’ve actually used that last one once a day to even out the crazy energy.

I kept the cone on her at all times and she still is wearing it. This is Day 11! I had gotten her conditioned to wear it comfortably and without fear through counter conditioning and wearing a few hours here and there, in October. She had a lick granuloma early on after we adopted her and that healed well.

She’s been an incredible trooper!!! I am so proud of my baby. She will be getting the cone off on Christmas Day. I’ve kept her comfy and she’s gotten stuffed frozen Toppls and Pupsicles to keep her entertained. And tons of rest!!!

Just wanted to share some cute photos of Joy from the past month. Merry Christmas to all!

What a great report, @bernerlabreclectus , and the best present possible for Joy, having the cone removed on Christmas day!
Did you actually paint decorations on the cone — that pic is so cute! She is really such a lovely dog. I’m glad she brings you so much joy, just as her name decrees. ????

Awe, thank you, Virginia! I actually just used stickers on Instagram to create that post. She got a new holiday collar and since she’s healed, I called the vet and they said I could take the cone off early, as long as she doesn’t lick the area too much. So, I just took it off. She’s free!!!

She definitely is Joy!!! Thank you!☺️

Wonderful update, @bernerlabreclectus – how fun. You deserve all the happiness and JOY that she brings. It’s good to know she’s healing well from her surgery. I can’t wait to see what’s next for you both!

Happy Holidays to you and yours.
