  • Starting to train Leave it? Are you using errorless learning?

Leave it is a fantastic behavior to train for many reasons. It helps foster self control, builds confidence and can keep dogs safe (how many of us have encountered dangerous but enticing items for our dogs while out on a walk?).

There are different ways to train it, but it is always important to include the concept of errorless learning in the training plan. Errorless learning involves breaking the steps in the training plan down to minimize the number of “mistakes” our dogs make and prevent frustration.

Here is a video demonstrating the initial steps of one of the ways to train leave it. What do you like about this technique? What do you do differently when you’re training this important behavior?

For an great video showing it being used when the behavior is more fluent, check out @pawsup excellent demonstration video https://mycatchcampus.com/forums/discussion/leave-it-demonstration/

Great video to show initial steps!! I know my video was final result. It took a lot of steps to get to that! It is still one of my favorite cues to teach, I love seeing so many different ways to teach it!

Well done @AmyMc It’s so helpful to see how to start teaching this important behavior. Isn’t it fun, to see them puzzle out what works? More pleasant for the human trainer, too. (I remember how we taught leave it in the old days and this errorless way is soooo much better for all – and I think it results in a dog who thinks about their choices, rather than “does nothing.” Good stuff!

This video demonstration is perfect for new learners.

Leave it is my favorite cue to teach too. And yes, it is so important that the technique be stress/frustration free. It is crucial for the dog to associate the learning techniques as something fun and awesome than frustrating and feeling anxious during the training.

    Loved your work. <3
