  • Stressed-Out Shelter Dogs With Jumpy-Mouthy Behavior – Practical Tips!

    Posted by Catherine Comden on April 3, 2023 at 10:31 am

    During our Bounce Back HoundTable, Ferdie Yau shared an impressive case study. A large shepherd mix, Chewy, was jumpy and mouthy and difficult to handle. His adoption prospects were grim. ????

    ✅Ferdie and his team got to work, initiating stress reduction strategies alongside teaching coping skills… and just a few months later, Chewy was able to better cope and control his impulses. He was successfully adopted. ????

    Ferdie said that though some of the behaviors flared up during the stressful transition to the new home, they were able to give the adopter information about the strategies that worked for Chewy. Once the adopter implemented just a couple of these, Chewy remembered his skills. ????

    ????Gotta love a success story! ????

    Here are two clips of Chewy’s training plan. Take a look and let us know if you’ve tried these methods with any dog, whether in a shelter or in a home. How did it go?

    Hi @catherine ! Hope you are well! Is there an actual training plan that Ferdie shared? Thanks!

      Hi @sandy – I think you are asking if there is a written plan? No, Ferdie did not share anything in writing, but if you watch the videos you should get some good ideas. If you would like to share some case details I’m sure we can all help brainstorm as well.

        Hi @catherine ! Thank you! Yes, I’d love to hear everyone’s strategies for working with jumpy/mouthy dogs. I’ve been tasked with putting together a plan for a lovely 1 year old shelter dog who has been returned twice due to this behavior. TIA everyone! 🙂

          Excellent! The best way to do that would be to create a new post and give us more details about the dog, the history and the challenges. If you have a photo, great. If not, I can add one and then feature the post so it gets lots of attention. Can you create a new discussion here? @sandy

    @catherine

    I’m so interested in watching these videos! However, my phone is not accepting the formats and tells me to download to watch them. I have the iPhone 14 Pro, so, that was out on the market at the time you posted these…Not sure how to get Ferdie’s knowledge…

      @bernerlabreclectus – so sorry for the tech issues. The phone app is buggy and we’re in a perpetual round-about with the developers. The video plays for me on my laptop. You might try using your browser to navigate to DD and this post, on your phone, rather than going through the app. You could also try a desktop/laptop. Sorry for the hassle!

        Thanks, @catherine …I’m actually on the website in my browser on my phone almost all of the time for my posts and check ins…the app has often not worked for me since I got the new phone almost a year ago. Argh!

        I will try on my boyfriend’s laptop. Have some exceptionally jumpy and one mouth of a dog currently. Trying to come up with good plans for all 3 families.

          Hi @catherine and @bernerlabreclectus I wonder if anyone would be interested in developing a behaviour change plan for jumpy mouthy dogs, incorporating everything we have so far as well as gathering new ideas and protocols? What are your thoughts?

            Hey @sandy ! It sounds like an awesome idea! Would you get us started by posting a Training Plan challenge, or is that a HMWTC, @catherine ?

            I’m all in!!!

              Sounds like a great idea, but you will need to run with this one without me… I’m busy getting our Rock Solid STAY 7 Day Challenge ready to go! Watch the newsletter for updates, and of course I’ll post more in DD as we get closer. Thanks!
