Sorry for the excessive posting about yesterday’s adventures, but I thought this could be an interesting discussion: do any of you have stories of changes in your dogs’ behavior regarding another animal’s illness? I posted a moment ago that my cat landed in the ER yesterday. Very interestingly, prior to heading to the hospital, my dogs were obsessively following him around the house and intently sniffing him- like they were trying to inhale his whole body for information for a book report ???? I’d love to hear stories of your dogs alerting you to a problem with another pet!

ooh. Great observation. Was their sniffing the reason you took your kitty in? Or was there something observable by you as well?

It was both, actually. A very interesting scenario. My cat is 15 and has some known health issues like asthma. But he had no appetite that morning, so I was already planning on getting him in somewhere if he didn’t eat by mid-afternoon. But then I though his breathing was strange (increased effort) and just as I noticed that, all three dogs took turns velcro-nosing onto him. That’s when I panicked and thought “oh my gosh he’s in congestive heart failure!” Well, the good news according to all his tests: no congestive heart failure. The bad news: enlarged heart, infection secondary to asthma, and mild constipation. The great news, He is awesome at taking meds and his is currently sitting next to me and Toki snoozing away.

Oh wow – so glad you caught it all in time – Your dogs are all lifesavers! Super glad you can be there to keep him comfortable too. Best wishes for many more years together!

Thank you! Yes, I agree – these pups may not always agree with what my cat has to say ???? but in the end, they are a pretty cool little team!
