  • Tips for the Find the Value Food Game

Posted by Catherine Comden on September 20, 2021 at 5:25 pm

The Find the Value game is a great way to see which foods your dog loves the most.

To get the most out of this game, be sure to play it in a familiar area, away from other distractions. Keep the foods you are “auditioning” up on a shelf or table.

Take down only two foods at a time – one in each hand, and close your fists over the treats.

Show your dog your closed fists, so they can smell the food.

Then spread your hands apart and open your hands or place the food on the floor, your arms’ distance apart.

Which one does your dog go for, first? Share a video or post a comment, below.

I will try this to test my treat variety for a training class. I have a bunch of high value items but am never quite sure which trumps the other or in what order they are most valued. I have a vague idea but its good to know how to keep a variety while being able to increase the value as you go – because once the magic cheese is on the table I cant expect attention span to hold if I start offering chicken!

That’s a great application of this game, @LisaD I used to call this game, “Show me the money” as I introduced it to clients in class and had them play it with their dogs. They always seemed to get the idea that certain treats were 1$ bills and others were $50s or $100s. Let us know how it goes!

Lol that is great! Yes I must plan this tasting session. Last night she was in class and I saw her eyes light up huge when I opened the bacon bag (a new one). I love all the cues our dogs give – the alertness level, the way and speed in which they take the treat, mouth reaction – to tell us how much they are being paid.
