Tricks Aren’t Just for Kids!
Posted by Virginia Dare on April 4, 2023 at 8:36 amBack in the day, I absolutely LOVED to teach my dogs piles of fun tricks, including my papillon, La Miette. One of her tricks was a variation on the “Jack in the box” theme. I called it “Pap in the box.”
Got tricks? Show us!

This is EXCEEDINGLY ADORABLE! Thanks for sharing, @virginiad .
Geez. Do my dogs even know any tricks!? haha.
Bliss can pick up all the things and bring them to me. Is that “tricky” enough? I’ve not really taught her the names of many objects. She mostly just gets anything I drop (immediately) or tries to figure out what I’m pointing at and will bring me that.

Love this! You made me laugh out loud. My BF , too. Such a sweet pup!
I taught a client’s dog how to retrieve her cane for her. Client has MS and dog was just a walking client of mine, who was an overweight Service dog who needed exercise. Did I mention the dog was afraid of the sound of the cane falling, in the first place?!? Desensitization first, then the task (dog thinks It’s a trick, Hee Hee!)
I taught this to Willow, but the stipulation was, that as a brand-new trainer, I was not sure I could teach this behavior. It took a few months (older dog), but she happily learned.
Enjoy. By the way, she’s also lost 30 pounds since I taught this in 2020. ????

Working in a daycare, this little corgi puppy would get bored. So instead of letting him rehearse not so fun behaviors (barking????) I would teach him tricks. Here is after session two with him. Learning to spin as the signal. Not only did he love learning but the others dogs were always attentive to get asked to do something with me too! Most likely a sit or something simple:)
I do trick training with my Berner too! Not only to build his confidence but mine as well. Working with so many different breeds, it really makes you learn to pivot and think outside the box:)

That’s adorable, @pawsup !
Many years ago, when I acquired my first toy breed — the papillon who is featured in the video above — it opened up a whole new world of training nuances for me. The advice I’d give for medium to large dogs did not always apply to the itty bitties! I’ve learned so much living with dogs ranging from 6 lbs to 95 lbs, across a wide range of breeds and mixes. You’re so right about the value of being able to think ‘outside the box.’ ????

I absolutely agree! I do not work in daycare anymore but took the job to experience many breeds!

Oooh, @pawsup ! So cute! I love how quiet everyone is, too. What a bonus (did someone say: ???????)
Corgis seem to be a highly intelligent, yet mischievous and easily bored breed, if you don’t have their attention. You obviously are this little one’s favorite friend!
Congratulations to you!!! Coincidentally, I would love to see Mac spin! ????

@bernerlabreclectus you are right on about corgis! The honesty need a job! I am surprised how many were in the daycare and they would get board…leading to barking and herding other dogs!!
I do train Mack tricks. He is a little fearful ( you know berns) I see how much it builds his confidence;) I do have to do spin someday. I just taught him to weave and I didn’t realize how tricky that would be being their size. ????

@pawsup : Yes, their size means choosing tricks make them confident and work to their strengths, right?
What are some of his favorite tricks? I’d love to see, if you ever get the chance to video!

Here’s a client of mine, who is a personal trainer. She and I swap services, 1/2 hour for training her two dogs and then 1/2 hour for her to train me, usually a cool Tabata workout. Between sessions last summer, we used her BOSU to do some balancing work with her pups. Here is Isaac, getting all 4 paws on! Great work by my trainer, Shawn!
