  • Video: Body Language Breakdown – Part 1 – Brindle – First 17 Secs

Posted by David Muriello on April 20, 2022 at 12:34 pm

Let’s workshop this! We’re starting with one short clip of a very interesting dog-dog interaction shared by member @bmacwatt (thank you!)
We’re going to review the full interaction over a series of posts. It gets more and more interesting as we go. Together, we’ll be creating the content for a Body Language Breakdown write-up which will get edited into a final document complete with behavior interpretation. Everyone who contributes will have your name included on the final document. This is going to be another awesome write-up that will live here in the community and be available to all members forever. ????

Video breakdowns like this are the most powerful way to learn to see and understand dog body language! Let’s dig in…

    • Start by observing just the brindle mix, we’ll call him Brindle.
    • Choose a range of 3 seconds to that you are going to focus on.
    • For those 3 seconds, list the details for any body language or behavior you see in Brindle.
    • Time stamp your list just by writing the “second” you saw it in front of your observations.
    • Stick to the 3-second range you focused on, but you can also jump in to give positive feedback to other observations you agree with.

Here’s an example of how your observations for Brindle might look:
1 – tail wag, medium speed, medium height
    2 – step forward, sniff bulldog’s rear
2- dogs are side-by-side (parallel) but facing each other’s rears, slight curve in brindle

????Join in for the learning and get your name on the final project writeup! This is the first of several posts that will take us through this fascinating video. The whole video is less than a minute. But, it’s amazing how much happens in a minute and the interaction gets more interesting and intense as it goes. The last stage of our workshop will be the interpretation. For now, we focus on observation (without guessing what’s going on). Share your observations! Part 2 is now here.

I hope I am doing this right. I can’t wait to see about this video, I think it’s so interesting.

8sec- look away, head turns completely away, mouth closed, body stiff, dogs are side by side

9 sec – tail changes to a short motion wag up top

10 sec- legs still braced and stiff, still looking away , tail stops wagging

Yep, @pawsup you’ve got the idea perfectly. Thanks for sharing what you see in seconds 8-10! Bonus props for being the first to get us going. ????

01 sec. The base of the tail on brindle colored dog is high, all four paws planted firmly on ground

02 sec. Brindle dog is sniffing back of other dog-maybe seeking offensive posture, overall body language is rigid, very little movement

03 sec Brindle dog starts to sniff butt, to gain more information about the other dog

@bmacwatt – very observant, noting the *lack* of movement. Just as important as noting movement itself. Well done.

I’ll play too! This is so fun and it’s amazing how much you can tell when you slow things down and take it just a frame at a time. A lot happens in 3 seconds! I took the timestamp :04 to :07

:04 Brindle has stiff, high tail, body straight with head turned to sniff Bulldog.

:05 Brindle tail arc expands into looser arc.

    :07 Brindle turns head away.

Awesome, we now have seconds 11-17 open for more observations to get listed.

It’s fascinating that I had to watch three seconds about 5 or 6 times to make sure I was catching everything on just one dog!

11- look away from other dog

12- stiff posture, tail stops moving

13-ears stiff, body stiff, possible side eye but still looking away

@hollyjmartinez Good work – and nice job staying with your observations, not yet moving to interpreting (I find that really difficult when noting, “stiff, stiff, stiff….”) Well done.

1 – body apart, not quite parallel, head turned toward bulldog

2 – body curved, moves closer, head moves closer and over the top, smells back of bulldog, tail wagging slow and high

3 – head moves to smell rear end of bulldog, head lower, ears forward, tail still wagging high

@countrygirl – Diane, nice way to point out so many details like where the Brindle is sniffing the Bulldog. You captured a lot here.

So much to see. and multiple views I lost count. At 0-3 seconds- brindle moves toward the other dog, attempts a sniff and then nose over his own back turns head to left and tries again for a sniff. 3-6 seconds wags the tail and tries to sniff again (not sure if the bulldog backed up to the wall to block a sniff) 6-9 seconds turns head to the right 9-12 seconds tail becomes stiff and stops wagging 12-15 seconds head goes down, ears back and slow stiff wag.

Brindle mostly parallel to Bulldog throughout the 3 seconds

sec 1 – Body stiff/still; tail held high with easy wagging; Ears erect; Nose pointed towards Bulldog’s butt for a sniff; mouth closed

sec 2 – Steps towards Bulldog’s butt; butt sniff; head turns over Bulldog’s Back; possible tension in Brindle’s brow area; mouth closed

sec 3 – sniffing over back of Bulldog; tail wagging; ears still erect; step back with hind left paw

14: Brindle is oriented so his head is towards the bulldog’s butt, although his head is turned away from the bulldog in a curved fashion; ears are erect; nose is down towards the floor; his body is stiff (you can see the tension in his hind legs, which are facing the camera); slight tail wag; and tail is at spine level or slightly below

15: Brindle is still stiff and in the same position as 14 except there is no tail wag

16: Brindle is still frozen with his head turned away from the bulldog

      Awesome teamwork @malia @debbie @denny @catherine @countrygirl @hollyjmartinez @bmacwatt @pawsup
We covered all 17 seconds of Brindle’s behaviors on this first video segment. ????????
The post will remain open to comments if anyone wants to add any other details.

In the meantime, part 2 is here. It’s just 10 seconds to cover and I see a couple of you already started on that one. Great stuff. ???? I’ll add the next segment early this week, keep a look out!

    seconds 15-17:

Continued looking away with neck stretched pretty far out, stiff posture, tail isn’t wagging but still medium high, ears are pointed forward along with the head, away from other dog (orientation is away and to the right) Further comment: just worth noting- this is a really tight space for 2 dogs to be together in, not much room for either one ‘giving spdce’ to the other!(hope that’s not drifting towards interpretation! ????)

I found it odd that the both of them stayed in such tight quarters through such physically tense interaction. Adding information about the environment can be very helpful – thank you @beaglemania!

Hi! I just joined this group and am so excited for the activities and content!

1 – curved body then steps to the side and towards the butt of the Bulldog, tail high and wagging, mouth closed, ears froward

2 – Tail high, butt sniff then top body sniff (or chin over), mouth closed, ears seem to be up but cant tell if it got shifted slightly back.

3 – Move back legs closer to Bulldog after hitting stool, top body sniff (or chin over), mouth closed

I chose starting at 8 seconds

8 seconds- look away and head turn right

9 seconds – tail movement pace goes slow

10 seconds- dog still looking away
