  • Video: Brindle III – Next 15 Secs – Body Language Breakdown Part 3 of 4

Get involved! We’ve had great work on the Body Language Breakdown so far! ???????? Let’s keep it going. Now, we are moving into the part of the interaction that is going to raise the most questions. Put on your dog vision glasses. ????What do you see?

    • Observe just the brindle mix.
    • Choose a range of 3 seconds to that you are going to focus on.
    • For those 3 seconds, list the details for any body language or behavior you see in Brindle.
    • Time stamp your list just by writing the “second” you saw it in front of your observations.
    • Stick to the 3-second range you focused on, but you can also jump in to give positive feedback to other observations you agree with.

    Part 2 is here.
    Our interpretation chat is here.

Comment on what you see and get your name on the final project writeup! This is the third of four posts that will take us through this video and this is the part where we will come back to when we are working on interpreting Brindle’s behavior. The last stage of this Body Language Breakdown will be the interpretation. For now, try to focus on just observation (without guessing what’s going on). Share what you see!

The first 3 seconds of this video… what I see is the brindle approaching bulldog straight on no hesitation. Brindle begins sniffing and licking bulldog’s face and right eye/ear. When bulldog does a shake off, brindle backs his head up but does not move his feet away and as soon as shake off is over brindle goes right back to sniffing bulldog’s face.

6 – Brindle positions muzzle in front of Bulldog, then moves to keep muzzle/face in front of Bulldog, ears forward, mouth closed

7 – Looks to give a slight bow then bites (or muzzle poke) the ear of the Bulldog, growling

8 – Brindle moves back, growls, ears back, mouth closed

P.s. I really like these videos because I need to get more familiar with body language and interactions. They HELP so much!

5 seconds- head lowers to sniff bulldog

6 seconds- Brindle shifts to front of bulldog and sniffs face

9-rear end lowered, ears back, growl type noise heard, tail lowered-mid height, Brindle’s neck is curved and over head over Bulldog’s head/neck, front paws off ground, body position is perpendicular to Bulldog and leaning away

10-body position is perpendicular and leaning away (to start), tail is mid height but straight out. Then weight shift towards bulldog on front legs, tail raises a bit at base and rest of tail arches with a slight “flag” type wag. Mouth closed, ears forward, appears to be a direct stare.

11-body cured and perpendicular to Bulldog (off balance type- stance), tail base appears mid height but tail is has arc and a “flag” type wag. Head turns toward person, mouth closed, left ears appears to turn toward person

sec 11-14….bulldog has given his “back off” warning and brindle has backed off, but not far!

Tail still high and tight, body still stiff…only deterred by the light coming on and distracting from the invasive behaviour.

Wow- Brindle walks up to bulldog and licks the face and then backs off. Next few seconds the bulldog does a shake off. Brindle goes back toward bulldog’s face and ? bite to ear and then backs, jumps back with ears erect, tail is straight and stiff. Then Brindle jumps forward to go to bulldogs ear again and ? bite – bulldog is growling . Brindle turns to look up to owner . and Bulldog look toward owner too.

4s. Brindle steps in front of bulldog in response to look away

7s. Brindle wags tail in response to human correction “eheh”

8s. Brindle looks to human and continues wagging tail (subjective: Brindle appears to be utterly adorable trouble maker)

Hey everyone, we’ve had a few comments on the growling we’re hearing in this video – many of you are attributing the noise to Brindle but some think Bulldog.. but I’m not sure I can tell for certain. Who has really good ears for these dogs’ voices and can help out your editing team? @bmacwatt you were obviously there and know the dogs – can you chime in?

I was not there when the video was taken so I am not exactly sure who is making the vocalizations. The video was sent to me by the owner. I will try to find out who is making all the noises. I only had one evaluation with the Sarge (brindle ) without the bulldog present.
