Expert trainer Kelsey Weber, CPDT-KA works with a lot of leash-reactive dogs. She also trains facility dogs for emergency responder departments and has built-in to her training protocol a way for her highly social Labradors to “opt out” if they aren’t feeling the love, in that interaction. She is teaching dogs to express consent, which is simply phenomenal.

Check out how Kelsey gets this fascinating expression in a trusting relationship with her teams. This method also works with dogs who are learning to accept “triggers” in their environment, which she also refers to in this video.

Have you tried this type of reinforcement delivery? Tell us more!

This makes so much sense. Addressing the emotional aspect in every method is soo important. As mentioned here throwing treats away from the triggers and giving them space makes the dog comfortable rather than pushing the dog past the comfort zone and forcefully taking treats from strangers.

In our shelter, we do something called a treat-retreat game. Where we give the dog an option of coming towards the stranger, (or any trigger, in our case towards the leash), not just forcefully push the dog to meet the stranger/or get leashed.
