Posted by Catherine Comden on November 27, 2024 at 11:03 amImma leave this here over the long weekend and be back on Monday with a breed reveal… Who knows this breed?
Hint: About 2ft tall at the shoulder, and about 80lbs fully grown.
Another hint: It’s not a Puli, but does have dreadlocks….

@PerpetualCleric Ha, yes!!! Thanks for beating me to it. I actually went back and changed my original acronym, I had put an “A” where my “B” was…didn’t want to break any rules around here with foul language.???? Hope Christina answered you, @beaglemania . Ha ha!

Meet the Bergamasco Shepherd!
The Bergamascois a unique herding and guardian breed with roots in the Italian Alps. Its most striking feature is its one-of-a-kind coat, made of three types of hair (undercoat, “goat hair,” and “wool”) that naturally form dreadlocks. These mats provide insulation and protection from harsh weather and predators. Grooming is surprisingly low-maintenance once the flocks mature at about one year old.
Bergamascos are highly intelligent and independent thinkers, traits developed from years of working without constant human supervision.
While they are calm and affectionate with their families, they can be a bit standoffish with strangers, a common trait in livestock guardian breeds. This natural caution makes them excellent protectors but requires early socialization to ensure they’re confident and adaptable in new situations.
Training these dogs is most effective when using positive reinforcement and offering challenges that engage their problem-solving abilities. They bond deeply with their people and show incredible patience, especially with children. With proper care and training, the Bergamasco is not only a capable working dog but also a loyal and unique companion. They’re generally healthy, too, with minimal breed-specific health concerns.
