Recently @Beka and I were chatting about a dog she’s working with. This husky named Tika doesn’t like food treats and will actually shove them away when offered! Listen to the brilliant ideas Beka and Tika’s mom came up with, to motivate this independent working breed. And then, share:

What’s a a unique, non-food motivator you have used in training?

I’m a big fan of using sniffing as a reward for many of my dog clients, as that’s something they seriously enjoy and are motivated by. Another motivator that I’ve had work for a few dogs is…water!

One client, Reese, absolutely lived for a chance to be splashed with water from a water bottle; he enjoyed chomping at the stream of water and having it hit his face. Another client, Dory, did much better with her recall when she was offered a few drinks of water from a bowl upon coming to us. Wasn’t interested in toys or treats but water was the ticket!

@programdev so many good takeaway points in this video. Using creative reinforcement strategies with dogs like this reeeeeeeaaallllly stretches us as trainers, don’t they?!

I have several Border Collie and Aussies that I work with who will eat the food if offered (albeit unenthusiastically) but if you get out a tennis ball…..they light UP.

I’d love to hear from others what some great (and unique) reinforcers they’ve used with some of the dogs they’ve worked with.

What a great video about motivation! I like how she said movement, I would never of thought if that! Also making a list! The one pointer I worked with a frisbee was his number one over food!! It takes a lot of brainstorming when food really isn’t that dogs motivation. Great video!

@pawsup if you’ve not already checked it out, Emily Stong and Allie Bender wrote an amazing book about all things enrichmenr. One of the focuses is creating a chart for what exactly is reinforcing for the dog you’re working with. You can find the book here Canine Enrichment for the Real World: Making It a Part of Your Dog’s Daily Life
