What To Do About Loose-Lipped Dogs!
Do you have a loose-lipped dog who is prone to drooling? ????
I’ve been working with a St. Bernard who drools buckets when he’s anticipating treats, as well as creating a wet mess on the floor after getting a drink of water from his bowl. At one lesson, his pet parent had a fetching pink bib tied around his neck so he could quickly dab up the drool, and I thought that was very clever.
Recently, I saw a cool video on TikTok that showed a dog getting a drink from a bowl and then immediately resting his chin on a nearby stand that was covered with a towel, to absorb the excess water. What a cool targeting exercise!

Oh yeah – this is a fun topic! I once had a client with two grown Bloodhounds who lived in the house. She met me at the front door with a towel in her hand. “Here,” she said. “You’re going to need this.” ????
And boy did I! I’m not one to live with that much slobber but she took it all in stride.
The bib is a great idea for those who don’t want to train a chin-wipe; but that chin-wipe is pretty impressive!

My Berner is a HUGE drooler. His head is more block head with loose lips. I mean, sometimes I look at my ceiling and see drool. So I can’t imagine a Saint Bernard! I have seen that video- what an awesome idea!

I know right!! And worse it always has a piece of black hair involved- he is the reason we invested in leather couches. Easy wipe off:)
